Day Two - Red Fort and rickshaw rides

The Red Fort built of local red sandstone
An Indian squirrel
A hair-raising ride by rickshaw across four busy lanes of traffic!
Into Old Delhi today and so many dogs! They look like dingos and most look well-fed, running wild but well-tolerated by the locals.

In a country where killing a mosquito might affect your chances of having a pleasant next life, all life is sacred. I was beginning to realise that Indians have a gentle acceptance of their lives. In the two weeks we were there I heard no raised voices, no signs of road rage, although Westerners would find driving very stressful on these roads, with few apparent rules.

One rule all drivers are aware of is: 'Whatever you do don't hit a cow.' Cows wander freely on the roads, some even sleep in the road. But if you hit one or worse, cause it's death, it's an instant £300 fine and sometimes even a jail sentence.

Today we visited the Red Fort and had a thrilling ride on rickshaws. These are  little two person carts propelled by a man on a bicycle. It was a bumpy ride around the narrow back streets lined with tiny, enticing little shops selling sari fabric or mounds of jewelled braids and then crossing and re-crossing four lanes of traffic just for the thrill of it, like the sort of fairground ride I couldn't be paid to go on!!
